DIED -- In Mansfield, Feb. 3d., of dyphtheria, JIMMIE MARSHALL, aged 7 years, 5 months and 15 days.

The funeral took place at the residence of his father, No. 13 Bowman street, Saturday afternoon, Feb. 4th., at 3 o'clock.

In the February 15th., 1883 issue of the HERALD, the following additional information was printed ...

Mr. and Mrs. John Marshall, within the past two weeks, have had their cup of sorrows full to overflowing.  First Jimmie, aged 7 years, 5 months and 15 days, the pride of his father and the pet of his mother, was stricken with that terror-imparting disease, diphtheria, and died on Saturday morning, the 3d. inst.  The four remaining children and the stricken parents followed their youngest child to the grave on Sunday.  A day or two later Dora C. and Laura B. were attacked by the dread disease, and at 11 o'clock Thursday night, Dora expired at the age of 13 years, 10 months and 1 day, followed at 3 o'clock by Laura, aged 18 years, 2 months and 19 days.  All that kindly care and medical attention could do was done to defy death, but to no avail.  

On Sunday at half-past one o'clock the friends, assembled at the residence of the parents and thence proceeded to the Congregational Church, where services were held at 2 o'clock.  Two hearses abreast preceded the funeral cortege, and on its arrival at the church the two white coffins were borne to either side of the pulpit by the pall-bearers -- all young men -- led by the pastor and Prof. W.F. Sherwin, of Cincinnati, and followed by the mourning relatives and friends.  Prof. Sherwin opened the services by reading a chapter from the script8ures, and Rev. Frank Russell followed in a brief discourse from Deut. 33:27, closing his remarks with a reference to the lives of the deceased and the positions they held in the choir, the Sunday School, the Young People's Society and the Children's Hour.

The floral decorations were elegant and profuse, and were mostly selected in Cincinnati by Mansfield Comandery No. 21, K.T.  On the table standing between the two caskets was a large pillow of flowers of most exquisite beauty and delicate hues with the words, "Our Darlings" in the center in small blue flowers;  in the midst of which was a pure white dove with spread wings.  Back of his piece was a large lyre of flowers and bunches of wheat, overshadowed by another dove.  On either side of this were small stands with floral designs of great beauty, a harp and a wreath from Laura's class in school, a lyre from her warmest friends, and many more of equal beauty at the home of the deceased, all of which bespoke the sorrow and sympathy of a large circle of sympathizing friends.  The vacant seat in the choir was marked by symbols of mourning in most skillful arrangement.  The seat itself was draped, and before it on the railing of the orchestra was the closed hymn book with crape mingled with white.  The choir sang two songs, sweet and touching, the first a tune composed for the occasion by Prof. Sherwin, with words never before used.

The procession was formed at the church in the same manner in which it came, and the services were concluded at the grave, both caskets being lowered into one excavation.

Fully a thousand friends listened to the funeral discourse, and both the services and the day will be long remembered.

In the February 22nd., 1883 issue of the HERALD, the following additional information was printed ...

Jennie M. Marshall, the only remaining daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Marshall, was prostrated with an attack of diphtheria early last week, and died on Friday, aged 12 years, 4 months and 9 days.  The funeral took place on Sunday afternoon last from the residence of her parents on Bowman Street.  Jennie is the fourth out of a family of five children who have died of the same disease within about three weeks.  Both Jennie and her surviving brother, aged about 15 years, attended the funeral on last Sunday of their two sisters.
